New Year's at Phatu Tha Prae Gate

Among other things, Chiang Mai is known for the lantern release during the Yi Peng lantern festival held in November. The tradition has been picked up by tourists on New Year’s eve as well. While it has nothing to do with Thai traditions and is relatively new, it still makes for an impressive spectacle. We watched visitors from all around the world release the lanterns near the Phatu Tha Prae Gate on the Eastern flank of the old town.
